USS Grunion

The US Navy announced on October 2, 2008 that the World War II submarine USS Grunion was found off the coast of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. The last time anyone heard from the submarine was July 30, 1942. That day the USS Grunion reported that there was heavy antisubmarine activity at the entrance to Kiska. The ship was directed to return to Dutch Harbor Naval Operating Base. On August 16 it was declared lost.

The news of this find brought closure to a woman living near Laurel. Meryl Kretschmann was only 6 years old when her father’s submarine, USS Grunion, disappeared. Her father, Carson Martin, had served in the navy for 16 years prior to the ship’s disappearance. Her story in the News Journal is here. An article about the ship in Science Daily is here.
