Laurel has a town election coming up. The offices of Mayor, Council Ward 2, Council Ward 3, and one of the Council At Large seats will be on the ballot. Provided that there are more than one filers for these seats, the election will occur on Thursday, March 26, 2009.
Right now, only the current mayor, John Shwed, has filed for the election. Mayor Shwed has his presence on Twitter and Facebook, so town residents can track his campaign there. On my Twitter account, I have a follower only identified as “Laux4Mayor” who is running for mayor as well. Yes, even Laurel will be using the power of Web 2.0 to gain votes.
To run for office, you must file by Thursday, February 19, 2009.
If you wish to cast a vote in the election, you must register by Thursday, February 26, 2009. To register, town residents can pick up a form at the town offices or download from the town’s web site. The forms are handled during business hours. The town has scheduled two after hours voter registration dates. Those dates will be Wednesday, February 11th until 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday, February 17th until 6:00 p.m. Anyone wishing to register to vote will need to be at least 18 years of age and a resident of Laurel, they will need to show a proof of address, either photo id, utility bill, etc.
The last election two years ago was cancelled due to no competition for the open seats. I hope that we have enough interest to have an election this year. As regular readers know, I think that it’s a shame when we have unopposed races. It would be good to see some opposition, as I am well aware that there are some residents that are not happy with the general direction of the town. Let’s have public debate and discussion about all this.
