My friends’ son Tyler Merritt is a student at Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has been active in Boy Scouts, playing soccer and baseball, and the church’s youth group. He does pet therapy at Lifecare at Lofland Park in Seaford. He resides in Laurel with his parents. Tyler will be going to China this summer as a student ambassador with People To People International. In China he will be doing a service project, visiting elementary schools, helping people with the English language, and other assignments. Of course, he will be taking in some of the sights in China including the Great Wall.

Tyler’s parents are helping him raise the money needed to go on this trip (approximately $7000). They have received and will receive donations. They are also raising funds via two different raffles. The first raffle is for a Nintendo Wii. The second raffle is for a 7 day RCI Resort vacation. Tickets for the raffles are $2 per ticket per raffle or 3 tickets for $5. The drawing will be held around spring break 2008. Funds are also being raised by “Flamingo Flocking”.

“Flamingo Flocking” happens when these pink flamingos appear on your yard. Tyler will remove them for $10. Tyler can also remove them and herd them to another residence of your choice for $15. To guarantee that those flamingos will not show up at your place, insurance can be purchased for $25. I forgot to buy my insurance, so you can guess what happened:

So, if you’d like to make a donation, purchase raffle tickets, or inflict flamingos on a friend, please contact the Merritts at Be sure to tell them you heard about it here at That’s Elbert.

UPDATE: The drawing will be held on March 23, 2008.
