Alan Levin Isn’t Running
The News Journal is reporting that Alan Levin will not be running for governor on the Republican ticket:
Alan B. Levin said this morning he will not run for governor of Delaware, ending the hopes of Republicans that the former CEO of Happy Harry’s pharmacy would help them end the Democrats’ decade-long hold on the state’s highest elected office.
“This is a personal decision, a change of life that I wasn’t really committed to at this time,” Levin said. “I like my privacy, I like my home life, I like traveling. There are a lot of things I would have had to give up – obviously during the campaign but also over the next four years if I was successful in the race.”
Apparently no one in the Republican Party knew this was coming:
Terry Strine, chairman of the state Republican Committee, was stunned by Levin’s announcement. Strine on Wednesday had predicted Levin would enter the race within two to four weeks.
“At this point it is new to all of us,” said Strine, who learned of Levin’s decision at 8:55 today. “I have spoken with (U.S. Rep.) Mike Castle, (former Gov.) Pete du Pont, (state Sen.) Charlie Copeland, (state Rep.) Greg Lavelle, the party leadership this morning. To everyone it is a shock, a disappointment and a total surprise.”
So now we are left with Mike Protack.
Protack told the News Journal, “If he [Levin] had declared sooner, I think people would have sensed more of a commitment, a desire to get on board.” Honestly, it looked that way from my viewpoint.
Alright, anybody else stepping up? Please?
Update: WGMD’s blog has the announcement.
Update 2: I did find out that Levin already had a campaign manager, so I would say that he was a bit more serious about getting into this race than I originally thought. I stand corrected.
